The Reverse - Shutterspeed EP (Run Out records) 02/07/2007

T: This starts off like it's going into something from Marty Robbins' "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" album then evolves into a tune more reminiscent of a late eighties Morrissey single. You could never call this immediate, but it does hold a fairly hypnotic appeal that demands repeat listens. By the time it finishes, it has become a brazen beast.

N: An EP amply produced by Graham Dominy (The Rifles, Razorlight, Supergrass), which does allow these well written songs a certain creedence before they even begin, and why they do start, you are rewarded. Nathan Loughran's nasally delivery is supported well by compositions that are well presented. 8/10

Puck - Beyond Reason

T: This sounds like Evanescence performing the songs of Linkin Park. Not handy when I don't like either of those bands. To be fair to them, they are very, very good at making the music they do. It's just that I'm not a big fan of this kind of stuff; all the same I wish them well.

N: These are definitely a bullet short of a full barrel, as power chords collide with female vocals and a chorus pedal takes its lead for the midway. A commercial sounding release from a band who know where they're going. Well written and produced, if not a little passe to my ears.

T: Who gives a puck what you think anyway?

Superkings - Hit The Ground Running/Wolves & Ravens (Feedback Records) 18/06/2007

N: To start off I like a band who are able to use a piano arrangement to good effect and on 'Hit The Ground...' that's certainly the case. This is a song filled with great imagery, as is the case on 'Wolves...', albeit presented totally differently. Tone you explain...

T: Some would call the lead track "morose", but it's full of sophisticated charm and is leftfield enough to make an immediate impact, whereas "Wolves and Ravens" has more of a carnival atmosphere about it, perhaps even stealing the female vocal from "Cotton Eyed Joe". This, despite sounding rather frightening, actually works perfectly. A great, great release.

N: The only questions that remain to be answered are: When are the Superkings going to release a full pack, will they be low or medium tar, and would they like to use the Atomicduster imprint? 9/10
